Well, it’s finally official. The Bucs will wear their famous creamsicle uniform during a game this season. Amidst the new Devin White saga, the Bucs posted a video on social media Wednesday morning announcing that the Bucco Bruce throwback uniforms are back this year.
The video features Tampa Bay’s former Bucco Bruce mascot, wearing a bright orange jacket and writing the words “I’m Back” in tribute to NBA legend Michael Jordan who writes the same words in a letter to to announce his retirement. The end of the video shows the Bucco Bruce logo with an orange background, further denoting the news.

The Bucs announced in late February last year that the jerseys would be making their return in 2023 due to supply chain challenges.
Many Bucs fans have been clamoring to see the creamsicle jerseys at least once a season for a throwback. It is considered a fan favorite by most. In fact, former head coach Bruce Arians previously stated that he felt they were one of the best uniforms in Football.
The Bucs have not worn the creamsicles since the 2012 season. This was because the NFL implemented a rule in 2013 that each team could only have one helmet per player for safety reasons. Since the Bucs’ primary colors are red and pewter, the white and orange creamsicle helmet with a red jersey wouldn’t make sense or fit.
Initially, the NFL announced in June 2021 that throwbacks could return in 2022. Other teams were able to wear it last season, but the Bucs had to wait a year.
Tampa Bay had the creamsicles as their primary jersey when the franchise began in 1976. They had those colors until 1998 when they switched to red and pewter. In 2014, the Bucs changed their jersey to alarm clock numbers and a touch of orange to match the main colors. Many (myself included) consider those renditions to be the worst jerseys in team history.
Fortunately, for 2020 they went back to more traditional looking jerseys with red, pewter and white and plain numbers. They won Super Bowl LV the first year they made the switch.

Even former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady showed his appreciation for the old orange and white outfit last season by wearing a Doug Williams jersey and posting it on his Instagram story. Brady later revealed it was a gift Williams gave him.
While it wasn’t enough to coax him out of retirement, it’s nice that the greatest QB of all time finds the fun in the jersey like so many others.
The creamsicles hold a special place for Bucs fans, especially the old school folks. Even those in the league recognize that when it comes to old uniforms, it’s the Bucs — followed by everyone else.
