The Brooklyn Nets took a huge step ahead of the NBA trade deadline this weekend. After Kyrie Irving received a trade request to close out the week, the team quickly began looking for a trade partner willing to hire him. The Dallas Mavericks stepped up to the plate.

Desperate to star alongside Luka Doncic, the Mavericks acquired Irving and Markieff Morris in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 first round pick and two future second round picks.

That trading package is probably as good as it would get for the Nets. They weren’t about to appease Irving and send him to a team he wanted to be with, like the Los Angeles Lakers, so the market for him was small.

Getting that kind of value out of Dallas in a deal for a player with Irving’s baggage and who plans to test free agency this summer is a job well done. But Sean Marks may not be done putting yet.

According to Marc Stein on his Substackis there any chance the Nets can now divert Dinwiddie into another deal before the February 9 deadline.

This season was a nice revival for Dinwiddie. He signed a three-year, $54 million deal with the Washington Wizards during the 2022 off-season, but struggled early on. It was his first appearance since injuring his ACL with the Nets early in the 2021–2022 season.

His performance with the Wizards was disappointing to say the least. He was traded to the Mavericks before the deadline as part of the return package for Kristaps Porzingis and has been playing very well ever since.

In 76 games with the Mavericks, Dinwiddie averaged 17.1 points per game on an impressive .466/.404/.788 shooting split. It was the best shooting trajectory he has taken in his career and he benefited greatly from playing alongside Doncic. He also added 4.9 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game during his time in Dallas.

Brooklyn will definitely need the scoring punch he brings with Irving now on his way to Dallas, but they could have bigger plans in store. Dinwiddie is certainly a name to keep an eye on in the coming days before the deadline.
