Manchester United have named Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana as their first-choice goalkeeper target this transfer window, and the latest developments suggest they are closer than ever to finding their man.
The goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford is currently in flux, with David De Gea now a free agent following the expiry of his contract on June 30 following controversy surrounding an agreed and later withdrawn deal.
However, Erik ten Hag wants Andre Onana as his number 1 and has pressured the club’s hierarchy to make a move. The Dutchman is confident the Inter Milan stopper will improve his team’s ability to play from behind.
According to 90min, that move is also becoming increasingly likely, after Onana reportedly turned down interest from Saudi Arabia. Despite being offered a lucrative contract to move to the Middle East, the Cameroonian goalkeeper wants to work with his former Ajax boss in the Premier League instead.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano also suggests that Onana is keen to sign for Manchester United, although there are still some hurdles to overcome.
Romano reports that the Red Devils have offered Inter £39 million for the 27-year-old, significantly less than the £51 million they are seeking for Onana in current form. While United value Onana at £43 million, there are suggestions the club are confident will put them in a strong position in the negotiations.
Onana still has four years left at San Siro, but Inter Milan are currently struggling financially and could be forced to sell for less than they value him at.
Ten Hag’s side have already signed a contract with Mason Mount this summer for 55 million pounds, and in addition to a goalkeeper, an attacker is a priority. However, with financial fair play rules to be reckoned with, it’s understandable that Manchester United intend to squeeze every last pound they can out of future deals.
