The Minnesota Timberwolves had big expectations going into the NBA season after acquiring Rudy Gobert in a blockbuster deal with the Utah Jazz in the offseason. Despite this, they hovered around .500 for most of the 2022–23 season.
When you make such a big line-up change, it’s going to take a while for the chemistry and cohesion to build. That was something the Timberwolves didn’t get as Karl-Anthony Towns has been sidelined for months.
Towns has been out with a calf injury since November 28. He played in the first 21 games of the season, averaging 20.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game, adjusting to life as the power forward in most sets alongside Gobert.
The results were certainly mixed as Minnesota went 10–11 with Towns in the lineup to start the season. Minnesota now ranks seventh in the Western Conference with a 31–30 record, patiently waiting for Towns to return to the lineup.
NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Karl-Anthony Towns & Minnesota Timberwolves Updates
Heading into the All-Star Break, it was reported that Towns hoped to return to the lineup in mid-to-late March so he would have enough time to get things going ahead of the playoffs. After Thursday’s practice, head coach Chris Finch gave a positive update as things appear to be on track for that timeline.
“He’s eager to play,” Finch said Thursday after practice. “I don’t think there is such a thing as going off track now. I think it’s just literally going through the final stages of what that looks like.
“I don’t know how long it’s going to be, but when I talk to him, I definitely feel more than any other conversation I’ve had with him so far, that he’s eager to come back and ready to help. this team when that time comes.
NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Karl-Anthony Towns & Minnesota Timberwolves Updates
Towns has missed 40 games. Given the 10–15 games he would like to play at the end of the season, that should put him on track to return sometime between March 10 and March 20.
As long as there are no setbacks, it looks like Towns will use the next two weeks to ramp up his activities in practice, with a return to court shortly after.
