Luton Town will demolish and rebuild an entire stand from its stadium this summer if they beat Coventry in the Championship Playoff final. Whichever team wins the huge game will automatically earn promotion to next season’s Premier League. Construction workers might only have less than three months to complete the massive job.
If Luton is promoted he will tear down Bobbers Stand at his historic Kenilworth Road stadium. It would then add seats, a media center, data analysis studios, restrooms and even a restaurant. Additional spotlights and camera positions will also be included.
Luton is confident that rebuilding a $12 million stadium will take 12 weeks
The renovations would be necessary to meet Premier League stadium guidelines. Club officials previously stated that the demolition would cost about $12 million to complete. Luton CEO Gary Sweet, however, was bullish on the venture on Tuesday.
“If anyone can do it, we can” proclaimed Sweet. “We practically have to rebuild a stand, but we’ve moved from non-League to Premier League so we can sort out that little matter.”
According to the Daily mail, promotion to the Premier League is worth around $222 million. While the renovation plans would be quite expensive, earning a promotion would more than cover the bill.
Kenilworth Road was built in 1905 and currently holds just over 10,000 fans. The club has plans to build an entirely new stadium in the near future. However, Luton hopes to reuse some of the materials in the possible renovations of the new arena.
Luton exec embraces the current outdated ground
Sweet also possibly embraced an old, old-fashioned stadium in the Premier League. “Erling Haaland isn’t going to walk through that entrance, he’s going through the other stupid entrance we have. Embrace it,” Sweet claimed.
“We have thick skins and it just goes to show that you don’t necessarily need a lavish environment to succeed. You can do it with hard work and guile, with intelligence and prudent financial management and absolute determination and dedication.
“You can do all that without having a nice stadium. It’s pretty. The old girl is pretty.
Luton will face Coventry City in the final of the Championship play-offs on Saturday 27 May at Wembley Stadium. If the Hatters are promoted, renovation of the stadium is expected to begin as soon as possible. The next Premier League campaign will start in mid-August.
