Leeds United and Leicester City drew 1–1 at Elland Road on Tuesday evening. Both teams came dangerously close to the drop zone in the midweek game. Leeds sat 16th, just one point ahead of Leicester. A win by either team would have helped create some distance at the bottom of the Premier League standings.
The visitors were given a boost before kick-off when two key players returned to the team. Harvey Barnes and James Maddison were both named in Dean Smith’s starting eleven that night. Barnes missed the last two games at the top level due to a hamstring injury. Maddison, on the other hand, was previously suffering from an illness. The dynamic duo are the club’s top two scorers during the current campaign.
Leicester thought to take the lead after six minutes on Tuesday thanks to a striking goal from Youri Tielemans. After some chaos near the Leeds goal, the midfielder hit the target from just outside the box. Boubakary Soumare, the player who played the pass to Tielemans, was offside in the build-up.
Hosts continue with Sinisterra header
Instead, Leeds would go forward in the 20th minute. Jack Harrison beat Leicester defender Victor Kristiansen and delivered a good cross towards the back post. Luis Sinisterra charged in from the left flank and headed the ball down and into the back of the net. It was the team’s first attempted shot of the game.
After the goal, both teams seemed to calm down. Neither side even shot on target in the 50 minutes following the Leeds attack. In fact, Leicester didn’t get a shot on target until the 73rd minute of the game. Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier made two good saves from shots from Kelechi Iheanacho in the 73rd and 74th minutes.
Vardy helps Leicester to the crucial draw at Leeds
However, the visitors would level the score in the 80th minute through substitute Jamie Vardy. Iheanacho, although injuring himself in the process, featured in Maddison rushing for goal. The midfielder then shot the ball to Vardy in the penalty area and the club legend would not miss from there. Iheanacho would be substituted after the goal due to the leg injury
Leeds striker Patrick Bamford essentially missed a sitter in the 90th minute to win the game. In the end he may have been offside, but the striker’s shot went wide from about a meter from goal. The opportunity came after the Whites took a corner and Leicester City keeper Daniel Iversen was nowhere to be seen.
The draw doesn’t necessarily hurt or help either side very much. Both teams finished the evening as they started in the table. Leeds are now two points clear of the relegation zone and Leicester just one. However, all three teams currently in the drop zone have an additional game credit.
