The Golden State Warriors have had a tough time this NBA season, and things aren’t getting any easier with Stephen Curry sidelined with a shoulder injury. Curry was injured on December 14 against the Indiana Pacers, a game the Warriors lost.
On their east coast road trip through most of the Atlantic Division, they lost three of their first four games without him. Golden State suffered blowouts at the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets while beating the Toronto Raptors.
The Warriors have found zero success outside of their home field as they go 3–16 on the road. That is the worst road record in the NBA so far this season as they tie with the Houston Rockets for fewer road wins on the season.
The old saying goes, let sleeping dogs lie, which was fitting for the Warriors. The defending champions are struggling and there is no need to stir them up. Memphis Grizzlies forward Dillon Brooks couldn’t help it and his comments ahead of their Christmas Day game gave the Warriors the motivation they needed.

Golden State jumped into the lead early on and rode that momentum throughout to win 123–109. Klay Thompson, who struggled with his jumper this season, was a player motivated by the trash.
“Some good old-fashioned nonsense talk,” said Thompson. “It’s always fun to talk about nonsense. We’ve been doing that since we were in high school. You usually play your best or you get exhausted. For me, it’s usually the first.”
Thompson scored a game-high 24 points and played a season-high 40 minutes as he focused on helping his team to a victory over one of the Western Conference contenders. Jordan Poole had a big game coming on as a substitute for Curry, scoring 32 points. Donte DiVincenzo, filling in for the injured Andrew Wiggins, also played a nice game, scoring 19 points with three rebounds, three assists and one steal.

It was a total team effort as the Warriors bench also had a fun night as Ty Jerome, Anthony Lamb and Moses Moody all scored in double digits as well. While this season has not gone according to plan for Golden State, they are still a formidable team at home, going 13–2 on the season.
“He was talking about dynasty and stuff. You can’t talk dynasty if you haven’t won,’ said Thompson. “I don’t think people realize how hard that is, the dedication and sacrifice it takes. You have to sacrifice your body.” “I thought it was premature to even mention that word. They get the best out of us, I think we do the same. If you don’t like them, you have to respect them, because they are a threat.”
The Grizzlies certainly have a long way to go as they were knocked out by the Warriors in the 2022 postseason in the second round. Memphis went home early, while Golden State won their fourth championship in eight years.

The game against the Grizzlies was the first in an eight-game homestand for the Warriors, which could very well be a jump start to their season. As Golden State begins to move up the standings and rack up wins, the rest of the league can thank Memphis for motivating and waking up what has been a season-long sleep.
