Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant plays as an MVP this season, helping the Nets get on track after some early season distractions. Succeeding in the NBA isn’t easy and it was tough in Brooklyn with Steve Nash stepping down as head coach and Kyrie Irving getting suspended.

Despite those obstacles, Durant shone, as his 30.1 points and 5.3 assists per game both lead the team. He also brings down 6.6 rebounds per game to go along with 1.6 blocks and 0.8 steals.

It’s hard to imagine the Nets coming close to this level of success if Durant’s offseason trade request had been granted and he was playing for another franchise.

Part of the reason Durant withdrew his request is that he and the Nets both realized their best shot at success was staying together, especially after Kyrie Irving also committed to return. Winning is the number 1 goal, especially after the Golden State Warriors won another championship in June.

After missing the postseason for two seasons, Golden State was back on top of the basketball world last season, taking home their fourth championship in eight years. It was something that Durant admits he hated it because he knew the focus would turn from their performance to himself.

“I can’t lie: watching the final I knew that so many people would turn their attention to me once they won. I was like, I hate that they won because you guys aren’t going to make it over them; it will all revolve around me. I think it’s just a childish way of looking at that experience. I feel like you can take it all in and appreciate what they’ve done and not even talk about me. I was just at home. But I get what it’s like.”

Durant took a big risk leaving Golden State in 2019 after injuring his Achilles tendon during the NBA Finals and missing the following season. He left a very stable organization that was a perennial contender for a franchise that hasn’t been so lucky lately and teamed up with Irving, who had left his last two franchises high and dry.

So far, things haven’t gone according to plan as the Nets have managed just one playoff series win in three seasons.

But with no drama currently surrounding the team, they look like legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference. As long as Durant and Irving play at this level, Brooklyn can stay in the league with any team.
