Harry Kane scored his 266th goal in a Spurs kit against Fulham. The only goal of the game put Kane level with Jimmy Greaves for most in Tottenham’s history.
More importantly in the short term, the goal gave Spurs a huge three points against a London rival. It cements Tottenham’s fifth place, three points behind Manchester United. Conte’s team has a five-point lead over Brighton. However, the Seagulls have played two games less.
The only goal of the match came in first half stoppage time, a new trend adopted by Tottenham. Spurs scored twice against Manchester City at the end of the first half. In contrast to that duel at the Etihad, Spurs managed to hold on to the lead at Craven Cottage.
Harry Kane picked up the ball with his back to goal just outside the 18-yard box. Kane, defended by American Tim Ream, turned left and fired what appeared to be a blind shot perfectly down the left side of Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno. The record-breaking goal was certainly one of Kane’s best goals for Spurs.
Despite Fulham flying forward with Willian on one side and Bobby Reid on the other, he could never quite find an equaliser. In true Antonio Conte fashion, the Spurs crouched down, preventing even a sniff at Fulham’s goal.
Perhaps Fulham’s best chance came in the first half, before Spurs’ opening goal. Hugo Lloris denied Harrison Reid. Sometimes all it takes is one moment of great quality. Kane delivered that, and three points, for Spurs on Monday.
Kane inspires Spurs to victory at Fulham
Moments of brilliance are commonplace for Kane. The Englishman is tied with Jimmy Greaves in Tottenham’s history. In the second half, however, he nearly topped Greaves in Tottenham’s goalscoring charts. His header from point blank range hit Bernd Leno’s leg, keeping Fulham in the game. That goal would also make him only the third player in Premier League history to score 200 league goals.
Kane’s next chance to capture Greaves is on January 28 in the FA Cup. Spurs travel to Championship side Preston in the fourth round.
As Spurs fans celebrate three points and a record goal, Kane may bring more good news for the North London faithful. According to David Orstein van The athleticKane is ready to extend his contract with Tottenham, which expires at the end of next season, if the “conditions are right”.
Those negotiations will begin after the January transfer window. You can follow the January transfer window updates on the day of the January 31 deadline. Coverage is available in the United States via Peacock.
