IPL 2023: Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri give their verdict on Virat Kohli-Gautam Gambhir verbal spat

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) star Virat Kohli and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) mentor Gautam Gambhir have dominated the headlines after their on-field spat in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL).
It was certainly not a pleasant sight to see India’s two World Cup winning squad members come close to clashes after the LSG-RCB match at Ekana Stadium on Monday 1 May. score, but it also painted a negative picture of the two individuals who collided in the past.
Since the altercation between Kohli and Gambhir, fans on social media have not stopped. The war of words between the two senior Indian cricketers has also sparked much discussion with many ex-cricketers speaking out about the situation.
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar was unhappy with how things turned out and denounced both Kohli and Gambhir, who were fined 100 per cent for breaching the code of conduct and committing the Level 2 offense.
Gavaskar believed that a fine alone would not be enough for these cricket icons and pushed for a more severe punishment so that the players would not repeat such acts.
“My point is to do something that will stop these things from happening. If you have to, you know, as it happened with Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth 10 years ago, you have to ask them to maybe step aside for a few matches… make sure you do something that will make sure these things don’t happen and also something that will hurt the team,” said Gavaskar during a speech on Star Sports.
“Will he be fined 1 crore and more? Well, that’s a very, very high fine. I don’t know what Gambhir’s situation is. They must ensure that this is not repeated. You hope this doesn’t happen again, because it’s such a big fine, such a heavy punishment.” Gavaskar added.
Former head coach of India Ravi Shastri believed that the IPL board of directors should intervene in such matters and invite all players involved in one place and have a direct conversation that such incidents would not be tolerated.
“Someone from the board of directors or the BCCI should take the initiative calling all parties involved forward. And whatever has been said or whatever the history, go in and nip it in the bud and with a stern warning, whether it’s Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, whether it’s Naveen-ul-Haq, whether it’s someone different. Chaar ka chaar ko lao saamne and have a direct conversation. “Yes, we understand that things happen in the heat of the moment. But there is a limit. And I’m afraid you’ve gone too far. So whatever you have to say, sort it out now, because it won’t be tolerated in the future.” said Shastri, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
