Dallas Mavericks point guard Kyrie Irving has politely asked NBA media members not to ask him questions about his future as a freelancer. He wants the focus to remain on the here and now about the Mavericks and this season.
While that request is simple and should be honored by the media, that doesn’t mean people will stop talking about his future. Irving may not be asked about his free agent plans anymore, but it’s a hot topic in the basketball world.
Irving will become a free agent this summer. That was part of the risk the Mavericks took in acquiring him, as he could be a loanee when it’s all said and done.
While the franchise could do anything to sell Irving for a long-term partnership with Luka Doncic, it comes down to money.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst recently appeared on Fanatics View and covered a wide variety of topics. One was Irving’s future, whom Windhorst made no prediction about, but sharing that money will be the determining factor of where he ends up as a free agent this summer.
“I don’t make predictions in general. I think what Kyrie wants is a big, giant, long contract. It’s a leverage between whether the Mavs have to provide that and whether Kyrie can get it. But if they are willing to offer the long contract, Kyrie will stay. It’s just a matter of where they meet halfway there.

That long-term contract was what Irving was looking for last season with the Brooklyn Nets. When they showed no interest in making a deal, Irving sought a trade. When no other team was willing to make a long-term offer either, Irving opted to stay with the Nets.
Commitment to Irving for the long term is a huge risk for any franchise. He has not been able to stay on the field in recent seasons, either through injury or self-injury. On the field, there is little discussion about whether he is a max player or not. But there’s more to it than just performing on the track.
