The Miami Heat was very quiet ahead of the NBA trade deadline. Although they tried to make some upgrades to the roster, the only deal they made was to trade Dewayne Dedmon to the San Antonio Spurs in a salary cap motivated trade. The Heat, along with Dedmon, added a second-round pick to the Spurs to take his salary as they promptly waived him.
Miami tried to find new homes for Duncan Robinson and Kyle Lowry, but nothing came to fruition. Teams were looking for multiple first-round picks to get attached to Robinson and talks involving Lowry just didn’t get past the finish line. The LA Clippers were reportedly one team interested in Lowry, but they went in a different direction.
Not getting an upgrade via trade was certainly disappointing, as Miami could definitely use one. They keep doing their job defensively, 4th place in defensive rating, but their offense has struggled all season. Heading into the All-Star breakaway, they rank 27th in offensive rating.
Fortunately for the Heat, they get another chance to upgrade the roster. With the Dedmon trade, they opened a roster spot, which means they can be buyers in the buyout market. Countless veterans have already found new homes and it looks like one of the available players will eventually land in South Beach.
NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love & Miami Heat Updates
Russell Westbrook, should he secure a buyout from the Utah Jazz, is tied with the Heat. Unfortunately, he’s not their number one target. According to Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel in South FloridaMiami prioritizes a big man, like Kevin Love or Serge Ibaka, over a point guard like Westbrook or Patrick Beverley.
Even before Dedmon traded the Heat, he needed their frontcourt. Love sounds like he’ll get a ticket to Miami once his buyout with the Cleveland Cavaliers is complete and should have a sizable role behind Bam Adebayo waiting for him.
NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love & Miami Heat Updates
Unless the Heat relinquishes another player, Love is the only addition they will make as he will take their 15th and final roster spot.
