The Toronto Raptors have been one of the most surprising teams in the NBA as we approach mid-season, but not in a positive way. After finishing №5 in the Eastern Conference last season, the Raptors currently rank 11th on the outside of the NBA Play-In Tournament.
They are probably better than their 17–23 record suggests, but you are what your record says you are and right now the Raptors are not a great team. That doesn’t mean they lack talent as there are some very good players on the team, they just lack that alpha to lead.
In the coming weeks, we could see Toronto reform its roster. With the looming luxury tax and multiple players with options for the 2023–24 season, the front office and ownership could try to pre-empt and make some trades. One of the players to keep an eye on is point guard Fred VanVleet.
VanVleet has gone from undrafted from Wichita State to an All-Star in the NBA. He has worked tirelessly to get to this point and could cash in on this in the off-season. VanVleet has a player option that many assume he will decline so he can sign another lucrative long-term contract.

That could become a moot point if VanVleet and the Raptors agree to the extension he qualifies for. Recently there was news that he turned down an offer from the team, but that is something he wants to clear up. VanVleet made a statement about his contract situation saying so some of the news was misleading.
That should put to rest any chatter about signing an extension, but we’ll know for sure what the franchise is up to in the days to come. If they no longer see VanVleet as a long-term building block, they can make it available in an exchange to store more assets in the future.

Pinpointing what a new contract might look like for him is difficult. He is having the worst shooting season of his career since becoming a regular part of the rotation as his numbers drop across the board. You don’t want to face a potential summer off like that, but VanVleet has plenty of time to turn things around, which in turn should lead to more wins for the team.
