On January 3, reports emerged of alleged threats Gregg Berhalter received during the World Cup. The allegations were made public by Berhalter as a result of an incident that took place 31 years ago between Berhalter and his now-wife Rosalind.

Berhalter claimed that someone had threatened to “take him down” in an attempt to end his tenure as USMNT head coach.

However, on Wednesday ESPN and The athletic both reported that Claudio Reyna and his wife, Danielle, were the ones in talks with US Soccer to report the incident of domestic violence between Berhalter and his wife.

Danielle Reyna, Gio Reyna’s mother, claims she threatened to release the information because she was frustrated by comments Berhalter made about her son, Gio Reyna, after the World Cup. At a conference, Berhalter criticized Gio Reyna and the uproar he caused at the World Cup camp. At the World Cup, Reyna played minimal minutes despite having great talent. At first it was about injuries. As it turned out, it was due to a lack of effort and a failure to meet expectations.

Before the tournament, however, Berhalter told Gio Reyna that he would have a limited number of minutes. This frustrated the attacker, who repeated his problems to his parents. Now, in a statement issued Wednesday, Danielle Reyna defended her actions.

“I thought it was especially unfair that Gio, who had apologized for his immature behavior over his playing time, was still being dragged through the mud while Gregg had asked and been forgiven for doing so many worse things at the same age.”

Danielle Reyna added that she never used the information to threaten anyone. However, Danielle Reyna and Rosalind Berhalter were college roommates at the time of the domestic violence incident between Gregg and Rosalind. Danielle Reyna added that she thought she was minimizing the issue in question.

“It took me a long time to forgive and accept Gregg after that, but I worked hard to pardon him, and in the end, they and their children have made a huge part of my family’s life,” said Danielle Reyna. “I would have wanted and expected him to give Gio the same grace. That is why the current situation is so painful and difficult.”

Berhalter’s contract with US Soccer has expired for the time being

Not only does this development look bad for everyone involved, it also comes at a special time for US Soccer. With Berhalter’s contract recently expiring, US Soccer opened an investigation into the coach.

For now, the federation has named Anthony Hudson interim head coach for January’s camp.

US Soccer may not make any further decision on Berhalter’s future until the investigation is complete. However, this revelation about Claudio and Danielle Reyna certainly adds controversy to the situation.
