Exequiel Palacios scored twice from the penalty spot in the second half as Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to beat Bayern Munich 2–1 at the Bay Arena on Sunday night.

The result is a huge blow to the reigning champions, now second in the standings to Borussia Dortmund with nine games remaining.

Leverkusen were the better of the two sides in the first half as they kept their opponents at bay with stoic defending and getting bodies behind the ball, while keeping their form when not in possession.

Xfrom Alonso men were first on most second balls, which disrupted Bayern’s rhythm and left Munich unable to stamp out threats.

Bayern takes the lead against the course of events

However, Bayern took the lead in the 22nd minute as Joshua Kimmich finished confidently from the box on a cross from Joao Cancel from the right wing.

Leon Goretzka brought the ball down before passing to Kimmich, who slid home against the run of play to give Bayern the breakaway goal.

Despite the setback, Leverkusen didn’t let their heads down as they played with great determination, making it difficult for Bayern to get their hands on the game.

Julian Nagelsmann brought in Kingsley Coman, Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry to improve his side in the second half.

Leverkusen completes comeback in second half

However, it was Leverkusen who made the better chances of the half.

Minutes after the restart, French winger Amine Adli was brought down in the penalty area as the referee booked the player for simulation.

However, VAR stepped in and showed it was a clear foul, and the referee reversed his decision to award a penalty to the hosts.

Palacios stepped up to send Yann Sommer the wrong way to restore the tie, one well deserved for the home side. Interestingly, Adli was brought down again 20 minutes later in the penalty area and again booked for simulation.

As before, the VAR intervened and the referee awarded a penalty.

Palacios resigned and converted for a second time to put his side ahead 2–1. Bayern threw numbers late, but Lukas Hradecky made a series of superb saves to negate Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Alphonso Davies as Leverkusen held on for a famous victory.

The result means Dortmund top the standings with 53 points from 25 games, one point ahead of Bayern going into the international break.

It will be interesting to see if Dortmund can secure the title from Bayern, who have won the Bundesliga for ten consecutive seasons.
