Former England test captain, Michael Vaughanhas created a storm in the cricketing world by dropping a rumor that could potentially lead to the biggest retirement upheaval in the Australian cricket team in the last two decades.

Speaking on Fox Cricket’s fifth Test preview, Vaughan claimed that whispers circulated in the press box during the fourth Test suggesting two Aussie superstars could play their final Test match at The Oval, London.

The rumored players are none other than the famous Australian batsmen, David Warner And Steve Smith. Vaughan stressed that the information he received was based on informal discussions between journalists on a rainy day, and there is no concrete evidence to support the speculation.

According to Vaughan, there was talk that Warner, who has been a prominent figure in the Australian cricket line-up, would consider retiring after the fifth Test at The Oval. The 36-year-old opener has had a mixed Ashes run in England, with inconsistent performances in the previous matches.

Likewise, the rumor mill was abuzz with suggestions that Smith, widely regarded as one of the best Test batsmen of his era, might also consider retiring from Test cricket after the conclusion of the fifth Test.

‘Well, on a rainy day it’s always the case that the journalists get a little bored and you start talking to a few. But the whispers were and I have no idea where they get these whispers from, but that if Warner plays in The Oval it will probably be his last. Vaughan was quoted on Fox Cricket.

Again, I’m not sure where they got that from. And there were pretty strong whispers about Steve Smith that it could also be his last time out for Australia at The Oval. Again, I haven’t personally seen that, but it’s just the whispers and gossip.

“Maybe it’s just the rain in Manchester that gets people talking, but that was the press box talk yesterday that some Australian legends, greats, would call it a day.”

Smith’s remarkable 32nd Test century during the second Ashes Test at Lord’s Cricket Ground on 29 June equalized him Steve Waugh’s record for most centuries by an Australian in Test cricket. His century at Lord’s further cemented his reputation as a true Ashes legend, with a total of 12 centuries in Ashes matches, tying him to the legendary Jack Hobbs for the second most tons in the historic rivalry. Only Sir Donald Bradman’s record of 19 centuries against England stands ahead.

While these retirement rumors have caused a stir among cricket fans and pundits alike, it is crucial to remember that they remain mere speculation until they are officially confirmed by the players themselves or Cricket Australia.

The Fifth Test at The Oval will no doubt have an extra layer of meaning if there is any truth to these whispers.
