Former Australian opener David Bean has indicated that he does not agree with the idea of Travis head to replace David Warner as the opener for the second Ashes Test at The Lord’s.
During a podcast interview on ‘SEN Tassie’, Boon was asked about the possibility of Head being promoted to the opening position at Lord’s to match England’s aggressive approach. Boon, however, expressed his opinion against such a move and suggested that Australia should stick with the existing combination.
He said that from his perspective, Warner should maintain his opener position despite his relatively lower contribution in the first test. Boon noted that Warner appeared to be more in control and showed improved performance in the second innings.
“There are many different ways you can look at it. Looking at it, I think Warner is still opening. He looked better in the second innings, had more control and Travis Head is going so well where he is at bat. I’d find it hard to change that.” Bean said.
He went on to say that if changes need to be made, they should be made in other parts of the batting lineup and not with Head. He highlighted the exceptional cricket Head has played over the past 18 months.
“I believe if you want to change something, do it somewhere else and leave Travis where he is. He has now had at least 18 months of exceptional cricket, playing several hundred and aggressively too. So personally I wouldn’t change that. added the former cricketer
In the First Test at Edgbaston, Head demonstrated his batting ability by amassing 66 runs, including a half-century, while batting in the middle order. On the other hand, Warner scored 45 runs in both innings.
Head’s recent performance is commendable as he has amassed 1455 runs at an impressive average of 53.88 in the 19 Tests he has played since the start of 2021. However, concerns have been raised about his vulnerability to the short deliveries, which may prevent Australia from promoting him to the top of the rankings.
Meanwhile, Australia have taken a commanding 1–0 lead in their five-match series against England after a thrilling first Test win at Edgbaston. Led by captain Pat Cummins, the Aussies emerged victorious in dramatic fashion on the final day, taking a two wicket victory.
In pursuit of the target set by England, Australia faced a challenging situation as they were reduced to 227/8 at one point. However, Captain Cummins showed his hitting skills by scoring a whopping 44 points. His innings played a vital role in steering the team to victory. Notably, Cummins formed a valuable 55-run partnership with Nathan Lyon for the ninth wicket, which proved to be a crucial turning point for Australia in the match.
