With the immediate future of the Eastlands outfit up in the air, following a Premier League investigation into breaching financial rules (opens in new tab)Pep Guardiola’s place as manager has been called into question.
The Catalan has previously stated that he would quit if it turned out that his bosses had lied to him. He is currently out of luck leave his post before the start of next season (opens in new tab).

While L’Equipe (opens in new tab) have reported Paris Saint-Germain’s interest in Guardiola — despite him alone signing an extension to his current City deal (opens in new tab) in November last year — it is believed that City themselves have put Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta high on their list to replace his former mentor.
The athletic (opens in new tab) reported last year that the Citizens were eyeing Arteta, and interest certainly grew following the Gunners’ surprising title challenge against City this season. In the past there was even mutual interest from Arteta.
Arteta worked under Guardiola at Manchester after she retired from football in 2016 The mirror (opens in new tab) claimed that one of the reasons Arteta left City for Arsenal in 2019 was that the Citizens did not guarantee him a path to manage the club after Guardiola left.
The now-Gunners boss grew up idolizing Guardiola as a player in the Basque Country and eventually played alongside him when he joined Barcelona’s La Masia academy. However, City were unsure about handing over the reins to an unproven coach when Guardiola decided to call it a day, something that wouldn’t be a problem now.

Whether Arteta would consider leaving for City is another matter. The Basque boss sees loyalty as a core value and would probably prefer to stay with the club that has helped him through tough times managerially, rather than leaving for a rival in the Premier League. With City potentially also facing financial sanctions, they may not be able to offer Arteta anything close to the control and budget to make him consider leaving Arsenal.
The mirror (opens in new tab) have previously reported that Guardiola is a target for the job in the Netherlands, The BBC (opens in new tab) have claimed that Brazil has approached him in the past and The independent (opens in new tab) have stated that after Fabio Capello he applied for an interview for the job in England but was turned down because he himself was not an Englishman.
