Team India’s disappointing defeat in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) against Australia in London has generated much criticism and scrutiny. Showing dominance in all three divisions, the Aussies pulled off an impressive 209-run win to claim the coveted Test Mace. This defeat marks India’s second defeat in the WTC finals following their previous defeat to New Zealand in the first edition of the tournament in 2021.
Since India’s defeat, fans and pundits from all corners have expressed their disappointment and criticism at the Rohit Sharma-led team. The final critic to join the chorus is the former West Indies cricketer Andy Roberts. Known for his leadership of the West Indies pace attack in the 1970s and 1980s, Roberts expressed his belief that the current Indian team was displaying arrogance by underestimating their opponents.
Roberts urged India to evaluate their focus and decide whether their priorities are in Test cricket or the limited overs formats. He expected the Indian team to show better performance and demonstrate high quality cricket which in his opinion they have failed to do.
“There is an arrogance that has crept into Indian cricket and because of this, India has underestimated the rest of the world. India needs to decide what their focus is: testing cricket or limited overs cricket. T20 cricket will run its course. There’s no contest between bat and ball there,” said Roberts as quoted by MidDay.
“I expected India to show their clout. I didn’t see a bright spot in the final though Ajinkya Rahane fought hard; was hit on his hand. Shubman Gill looks good playing those shots, but he’s on a leg stump and often gets sent off bowling or behind. He has good hands, but he has to get behind the ball. However, Virat Kohli got a brutal pitch from Mitchell Starc in the first innings. Mind you, India has some very good players, but they have not performed well away from home. he added.
The Antiguan cricketer also shared his thoughts on India’s decision to leave Ravichandran Ashwin out of the playing XI for the top battle. Roberts criticized this move, deeming it ridiculous. Known for his versatility and experience, Ashwin has been a valuable asset to the Indian team across a variety of game formats.
“Dropping Ashwin was ridiculous. How can you not choose your best spinner? unbelievable,” Roberts added.
